They call the kinds of wine grapes that grow in the upper Mississippi region, cold-hardy grapes, grapes bred to withstand extreme temperatures that would kill the traditionally grown grapes of California or France. These grapes, the farmers and wine makers of  the Midwest are pushing the envelope of viticulture and enology, growing grape vines that not only survive but thrive at temperatures as low as 40 below zero, yet yield exceptional wines. This story is called, Wine Diamonds: Uncorking America’s Heartland™

WINE DIAMONDS: UNCORKING AMERICA’S HEARTLAND™ A Documentary Film

Wine Diamonds: Uncorking America’s Heartland™ is a feature-length documentary film about the challenges and opportunities of developing a new wine region, showcasing the economic and agricultural diversity brought about by the wine industry, and how families are returning to and reuniting to grow wine grapes and build a new wine region in the Midwest.

The focus of the independent documentary film will be on Midwest winery/vineyard families that have returned to home to start a winery or vineyard operation (or members of the family that have returned to help start or run an operation). The producers will meet with and conduct in-depth interviews over the course of the year with participating wineries/vineyards, visiting periodically to film winery/vineyard operations, events and tape interviews with family members and others. It is the producers hope to show a diversity of operations (e.g., scale of operation, size of family, and location throughout the region).

In addition to documenting the family-run wine operations the producers are also interested in understanding the impact the wine industry is having on the rural economies of the Midwet, how grape growing is beginning to affect agricultural diversity, and the role of state university and extension programs have on a growing industry, and talk with governmental and industry leaders.
