On June 13, 2008, the Cedar River crested to its highest level in Cedar Rapids history, 31.12 feet. The previous record reached only 20 feet. The flood waters penetrated 10 square miles or 14 percent of the city. This monumental flood impacted 7,198 parcels, including 5,390 houses, dislocated more than 18,000 residents and damaged 310 City facilities.

The interstate was closed as were major highways. All but one bridge in downtown Cedar Rapids was under water restricting access to either side of the city. 3 of 4 city collector wells were disabled, as were 46 collector wells.

And… we were literally right in the middle of the flooding. Our studio was located in the Cherry Building which happened to be in the middle of the flood. As film makers we couldn’t not make a film about the flood. It’s what we do.

However, the film Resilience; The Spirit of Humanity doesn’t just focus on the flood and what happened during the week of the flooding. It tells the story of the People that came together to not only fight against the rising waters, but the worked to bring the city back.

This film profiles those individuals that you have probably not heard about. Those individuals that were working in the background and ultimately the effect it had on them. The Paramedics, Policewoman, Fireman, City Water Manager, the owner of Pohlena’s Meat market and others.

It’s not just about statistics. It’s about a human experience with something that can’t be stopped.
The film finishes with an update one year after the flood and how the city wouldn’t let the waters of Eastern Iowa wash it away.
